About SMIP

Saint Mary’s Immigration Program is a ministry of Saint Mary’s Cathedral.  It was begun by request of the Bishop in response the to the immigration raids at the local meatpacking plant on December 12th, 2007.  Implementing the U.S. bishops’ teaching on justice for immigrants, SMIP helps prepare and process immigration paperwork for significantly less cost than a private attorney.  St. Mary’s Cathedral is proud to provide these services to all immigrants and to help create good citizens and workers for the United States of America.

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC) begun by the Catholic bishops of the United States to enhance and expand delivery of legal services to indigent and low-income immigrants principally through diocesan immigration programs and to meet the immigration needs identified by the Catholic Church in the United States.  CLINIC assists Saint Mary’s Immigration Program in achieving its mission.

SMIP is accredited by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP) through the Department of Justice (DOJ) Recognition & Accreditation Program.  Client Representatives also receive individual accreditation by the OLAP and DOJ after receiving extensive training and submitting detailed application information for approval by the board.  Representatives continue their education in immigration law and procedure after accreditation.
